Bearwatching

The best way to view black bears in their natural habitat safely is from a boat. Resident bears come down to the beaches on a low tide to forage for such beach delicacies as rock crab, starfish and even a bit of kelp. They are fascinating to watch from the boat and thanks to their bad eyesight they are usually unaware of your presence as long as you keep quiet and down wind.

The Local Black Bears do not officially hibernate, but do become dormant and less often seen during the wet months of December and January. In the spring they live on Skunk Cabbage roots, waiting for the summer months when the berries will ripen. But there is little doubt that the fall season is the favorite time of year for a bear when they bulk up for winter by gorging themselves on salmon swimming upriver to spawn.

Bear watching – Tofino

Your choice of inflatable zodiac or cabin cruiser. There are tours exclusively for bear watching or you can do a combination tour of bear watching, whale watching and the hot springs.

Bear watching – Ucluelet

Explore the sheltered waters of Ucluelet’s harbor by voyageur canoe or kayak. There is always plenty of wildlife; you will usually see black bears foraging along the shoreline, eagles, harbour seals, sea lions and more. Fall is a good time to visit the local Thorton Fish Hatchery for an up close experience of bears feeding on spawning salmon.
